Location and function of the work

The cycle-pedestrian footbridge is designed to connect the ‘Il Maggiore’ Event Centre with the Flaim car park, contributing to the redevelopment of the area and offering a new panoramic viewpoint. The crossing is planned near the mouth of the San Bernardino Torrent, between the existing ANAS bridge on the S.S. 34 of Lake Maggiore and the entrance to Lake Maggiore.

Design features
and environmental integration

Considering the sensitivity of the urban and landscape context, the design solution was developed in agreement with the competent authorities to ensure maximum integration with the surrounding environment. The walkway was designed with a light structure and low visual impact, avoiding invasive architectural elements that could alter the urban landscape. The intervention is aimed at improving bicycle and pedestrian mobility, while guaranteeing user safety and compatibility with the existing infrastructural and environmental context.

The supporting structure consists of four steel tubular profiles arranged in continuity along the longitudinal development of the walkway.

These profiles are connected to each other by means of shaped steel plate blades and anchored to the upper deck by means of perforated steel profiles.

The deck, with a width of 5 metres and a thickness of approximately 15 cm, was realised with a mixed steel-concrete section, using shear connectors arranged perpendicularly to the sheet metal frame.

The total weight of the steel deck is 200 tonnes.
